Cassini’s Terrestrial Globe / Globo Terrestre di Cassini

Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745 – 1824) was an Italian globe maker, geographer, engraver, and cartographer. His main cartographic work was the Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale of 1792-1801. In 1790, the Calcografia Camerale of Rome published his twelve terrestrial globe gores, that updated the world cartography after the three voyages of Captain James Cook around the globe. The title of the terrestrial globe, printed on the globe itself, is:

To my knowledge, there are two versions of the gores freely available online at high resolution: one at the David Rumsey Map Collection, where you can enjoy a fascinating experiment of “3D virtualization“, and the other at the Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division. I have used the last ones, that are shown below:

The paper globe is 30 cm in diameter, and it is made completely of paper, except the axis, made with a 6 mm diameter wooden rod. The paper used in the original design is glossy photopaper for the globe and the cover of the base-support. The paper used for the construction of the base-support is plain paper 210 gsm. The project includes fully illustrated instructions in Italian and English.

Nel 1790 la Calcografia Camerale di Roma pubblicò I suoi dodici fusi per globo terrestre, aggiornato secondo le ultime rilevazioni effettuate durante I tre viaggi attorno al mondo del Capitano inglese James Cook.

Per questo progetto ho usato i 12 fusi ad alta risoluzione scaricabili dal sito della Library of Congress (USA) (Geography and Map Division).

Il globo ha 30 cm di diametro, ed è fatto completamente di carta, eccetto l’asse di rotazione che è costituito da un tondino di legno di 6 mm di diametro. Nel progetto originale ho usato carta da 210 g/mq e per il globo ed i rivestimenti carta fotografica lucida. Il progetto include istruzioni dettagliate in italiano ed inglese.

L’adattamento naturale mira a fornire le prestazioni migliori, anche se non per ogni esigenza. Sono rimasto colpito dalla postura di questo modello 3D, che cattura gli sforzi della giraffa nel raggiungere la fonte primaria di vita: l’acqua.

An hour’s drive from Rostov, vast wheat fields welcome visitors to Zernograd, as do a couple of relics of the old Soviet days: a hammer-and-sickle monument and a statue of Lenin. Zernograd became a showpiece of the Soviet collectivized farm system with help from American sympathizers who arrived in the 1920s with U.S. tractors and combines. Now, the town is again in the vanguard of Russian agriculture.

Meteor M84/3: comics by Fernando Rozada

The transMediterranean oceanographic cruise on board of the research vessel Meteor gave me the opportunity to meet (and to share the cabin with) Fernando Rozada, a skilled bio/chem technician working in Vigo (Spain), but he comes from the region of Castilla y Leon, or, as he prefers to say, from Leon. During the cruise we discovered that Fernando is a talentuous comics writer, too. He condensed our Mediterranean adventure in few funny strips, capturing with humour some of the topic events of the cruise.
So, enjoy the art of Fernando Rozada.

The METEOR transMediterranean Cruise 2011

From 5 to 28 April 2011 I will be on board of the German research ressel METEOR for a transMediterranean cruise. The principal scientific objective of the cruise (code M84/3) has two closely-linked components: understanding and documenting the large-scale Mediterranean water property distributions, their changes and drivers of those changes, and addressing questions of a future Mediterranean Sea that will increase in dissolved inorganic carbon, might become more stratified and experience changes in circulation and ventilation processes due to global warming. In the picture above the planned cruise track is depicted. Oceanographic stations are marked with different colors, according to the scientific activity planned.

The research vessel Meteor serves basic German open sea research worldwide, in collaboration with other countries active in this area. These topics include maritime meteorology and aerology, physical oceanography, applied physics, marine chemistry, marine botany, zoology, bacteriology, mycology, marine geology, sedimentology and marine geophysics.

This model (a wooden version) was used in one of the physics experiments described in the works by the French abbot Jean Antoine Nollet (1700-1770). When the double cone is placed at the lower end of the frame, it automatically starts to roll upward, giving the impression of defying the universal law of gravitational force. Questo modello (la sua versione in legno) fu usato in uno dei tanti esperimenti di fisica descritti per la prima volta in Francia nelle opere dell’abate francese Jean Antoine Nollet (1700-1770). Quando il doppio cono è posto sul bordo basso del binario, automaticamente comincia a rotolare verso il bordo alto, dando l’impressione di non seguire la legge universale della gravità.
